Why keywords are no longer enough
A keyword-optimized website answers a query. An entity-optimized website establishes an identity. Generative engines do not only seek the best page for a query. They seek a reliable source on who does what, backed by what evidence.
Keywords remain useful for understanding demand. But they no longer suffice to establish who is speaking, why the source is legitimate and how it connects to the rest of the web. An AI can find ten pages optimized for the same topic. A clear, verifiable identity connected to external sources makes a source easier to cite.
Entity SEO shifts the starting point from a query to an entity. Who is the author? What is the organization? Which sources confirm its expertise? Which sameAs links stabilize its identity? What schema connects everything without contradictions?
The three pillars of Entity SEO
- Recognition: your entity exists in Wikidata, Google's Knowledge Graph or an industry graph.
- Consistency: your name, role and sameAs links match wherever you appear.
- Evidence: every claim about your entity is verifiable, rather than merely asserted.
How to check whether you already have an entity
Search your name on Google. A Knowledge Panel beside the results is a visible sign that Google has identified you as an entity. Start by checking this recognition signal.
Second, look up your name or brand in Wikidata, Google, Perplexity and ChatGPT. If answers vary across platforms, the entity lacks stability. Inconsistent roles, social links or cited domains create uncertainty, making reliable citations harder.
Third, inspect your JSON-LD. An isolated Person or Organization schema is not enough. It needs stable @id values, relationships between entities, clean sameAs links, a consistent canonical page and a strict match with visible content.
What I fix first
I start with the root identity: name, role, canonical URL, sameAs links, author profile, organizational entity and evidence links. Then I address Flow: pillar pages, internal linking, FAQs, references and resource pages. Finally, I work on Trust: external sources, verifiable signals, structured data and cross-platform consistency.
The goal is not to look good in a Schema.org validator. It is to help Google, Bing, Perplexity, ChatGPT and Gemini answer a simple question: who is this entity, what does it cover and why can it be cited?
