Comparison
| Ahrefs | SEMrush | Native GEO tools | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core strength | Backlinks, technical crawling | Keyword research, content | AI share of voice, citations |
| Measurement to check separately | AI citation coverage | AI citation coverage | Technical SEO coverage |
Verdict
Ahrefs or SEMrush provide the traditional SEO foundation. AI citation measurement is a separate requirement to evaluate alongside it. Both measurement layers coexist.
What SEO tools see clearly
Ahrefs and SEMrush remain useful for traditional signals: backlinks, estimated traffic, keywords, rankings, strong pages, cannibalization and technical errors. Discarding those capabilities would be a mistake.
Whether a brand is cited in an AI answer is a different measurement question. It involves different data, surfaces and observation frequencies.
The right tool setup
I keep a traditional SEO layer for indexing and authority. I add GEO measurement for prompts, citations and AI competitors, then connect the two. A page that ranks but is never cited may lack structure, evidence or a clear entity identity.
